Upcycling artisans, Spain
Artist of the loom
Material: Upcycled cotton

In one of the main hubs for fast-fashion, these artisans were set to make a positive change. With a big surplus of overproduced and unused clothing, these creatives are turning the overstock into sustainable rugs. Shredded pieces of cotton are thoughtfully picked together and woven into carpets and pillows using a loom. The cotton and threads are entirely made from existing pre-consumer textiles, overproduced garments from the fast-fashion industry.

The cotton is shredded and spun by hand into little balls. Subsequently, these will be spun into usable flat pieces to be placed by hand on the loom. Colours and design are thoughtfully combined and the cotton strips are placed into a cardboard box. One box representing one rug.

After a long search, we found these artisans in a small isolated town in the south of Spain. On entering the manufactory, the warm welcome and smiling faces make you want to be a part of it. It is a close community as all live in the same little town, this being the main source of income.
